The life of the “organic pastured pig”
What could be more wonderful than seeing pasture-raised pigs running, rummaging in the fields, and wrapping themselves in straw? Well, at the Quebec organic producer, this is how pasture-raised pigs are raised. The pigs grow up with the utmost care. Each pregnant sow is raised in a group under a straw cover, while having access to pastures during the summer. After giving birth to the little piglets eager for good mother's milk, the sow can move around while protecting the little piglets and providing them with a warm little corner.
Pastured pigs are raised with the utmost respect for their welfare. They have access to the large pasture, where they can feed on young clover and other grasses. In addition, this gives them the opportunity to exercise their innate behavior of rooting the ground. They have the freedom to run, play, and roll around as they please throughout the summer season. Also, in cold weather, pastured pigs enjoy a large open space covered in straw where they can find a small hole to snooze with their companions. In addition, the livestock buildings have natural ventilation and daylight, which allows the animals to follow the rhythm of the day.
Feeding “organic pasture-fed pigs”
All pasture-raised pigs are fed exclusively certified organic feed grown on organic land and cultivated with the utmost attention to quality. Every day, they are served a freshly ground meal consisting of a mixture of oats, wheat, peas, corn, and soybeans. They also have free-range pasture during the summer and unlimited dry hay during the winter. This feed increases the Omega-3 content of the meat and significantly changes its taste, giving it a special aroma from the past!
The health of “organic pasture-raised pork”
All pasture-raised pigs receive no antibiotics or growth hormones. The organic producers work primarily on a preventative basis; the only products used are natural ones such as apple cider vinegar with garlic, seaweed, and diatomaceous earth as a dewormer. In case of illness, the animals are treated with homeopathic medicines.
Additionally, for better well-being and immunity, the piglets are weaned from their mothers after 35 days, twice the time required for conventional management. No mutilation of teeth or tails is practiced.
